Do we need to develop a service or system at the server-side to complete the search function and use some remote transmission technology to swap information with the mobile app(client-side). What is the function of the APIs provided and do we just need to use these interfaces to develop some application?

ANS.

As the title suggests, the challenge focuses on Mobile Image Search. However, teams are free to develop all types of mobile applications that incorporate image search as one of its functionality. These could include eCommerce, education, entertainment, games, and social media applications. Teams will need to do one of the following:

  • Develop a mobile application that directly calls one or more of the APIs provided.
  • Develop a mobile application that calls your server side engine. And your server engine makes use of one or more of the APIs provided.

ANS.

Both approaches are acceptable:

  • Developers may develop within WeChat on WeChat SDK, and hence users can only access to this application via WeChat, OR
  • Developers can build their own apps, which make use of WeChat API. Their app can have nothing to do with WeChat except call the WeChat Image Platform API from within the app (eg. the Singapore Landmark Search app).

How can the team register their interest?

ANS.

You should register on this website. You will need to give your team a name and give a title to your mobile app project.

Question 4

Is it necessary for the teams to use the datasets provided? Can we use any other resource to complete our project?

ANS.

It is not mandatory to use any of the datasets provided. It is just a guide to give team an idea of what a dataset is like. Teams can add to or combine the datasets provided, or develop their own.

Question 5

What do the teams need to deliver for the evaluation by the judges?

ANS.

The teams are expected to have a functional prototype of their mobile app which can be demonstrable to the judges. Teams are to submit a video of the demo (an example video can be found here). They should also have a presentation which highlights the:

  • Project Concept: motivation and opportunities
  • Innovation: highlight the app’s unique functions and any technically innovative approaches
  • Execution: highlight the app’s design, performance/responsiveness, and ease of use

Question 6

Who owns the rights to the Mobile Apps created by the teams?

ANS.

All Intellectual Property rights (APP, proposals) will belong to the participants. Tencent and Nanyang Technological University will be granted the right to use such Intellectual Property for free. Participants authorize competition organizers the free access to their programs & applications for testing and evaluation; and the free use of their programs & applications for promotional purposes.

Question 7

After this challenge is over, will all the teams still be able to access the WeChat Image Platform API from their apps?

ANS.

Yes, Tencent will continue to make the WeChat Smart Platform APIs available to developers for free to encourage development of new apps on this platform. This platform has been available to developers since April 2014, and Tencent will continue to enhance it with new features and APIs.
